Television shows that take place over the course of an evening which are decided by telephone voting are frequently blighted by what I call the "I've just come in from the pub mob" and the "I've watched something else and then just flipped over for the end posse".
The problem
What happens is these groups of people both only see the end of the show and then, understandably, vote for one of the later candidates/acts/talents (CATs), because that's one of the ones they've seen. This gives the final CAT a significant advantage over everyone else and, indeed, depending on the country's pub culture and the other programmes on that evening with significant viewing shares, each CAT an advantage over all the ones who were on before them.
Solutions so far
There are measures designed to counteract this. One is having each CAT having to do something more than once. If, in a singing show with three CATs, each CAT has to sing twice, then you at least have CAT1 singing once after each of CAT3 and CAT2 has sung their first song (assuming a 1,2,3,1,2,3 order) - or you could have a different order like 1,2,3,3,2,1 to try to maximise fairness. Whatever you do though, you have one CAT who's on last and who catches the votes of the aforementioned mob and posse.
Another idea is to open the voting lines straight away, before any CATs have even been on stage. This is flawed insofar as it means that people who vote based on a performance have more time to vote for certain CATs whilst people who just vote based on prior sympathies can vote regardless of what the CATs actually do on the night.
So if we want a fair vote reflective of people's assessments of what the CATs have done during the show, this doesn't work. You could argue that being able to vote for CAT1 balances out the swing to CAT3 from the mob and posse, but having two terrible features in a system and hoping they approximately balance one another out is a bit like throwing a few nukes around and hoping more baddies than goodies die: neither scientific nor likely to work.
What you could do
My suggestion is to get people to register to vote. This would take place in the waffle that happens at the start of the show before any CATs have been on. This segment usually takes at least 15 minutes (on a standard Saturday evening format) and is ample time for people who are generally interesting in digging in for the evening to send a short text message (SMS) or ring up a number.
By registering they would make themselves (or anyone with the same phone number) eligible to vote during the voting phase, which would only begin after the last CAT's last performance. This seems technically straightforward to implement and would restrict voting to those people who have seen the whole show and so can make a fair decision. Clearly, some people might have some chips or something and miss one of the CATs, but you can imagine people's chip-eating habits to be varied enough for this to even itself out and not significantly (dis)advantage one CAT over another.
I don't really see many problems with this. You could, for example, easily adjust the price of calls to stop having to ring in twice hitting the voters' bank balances too much. It doesn't solve the fact that some certain audience sections (with some correlation with the kind of CAT they like) are more likely to take part in a phone vote than others, but that's true of all votes. At a parliamentary election, there are some sections of the electorate who would rather go down the pub than go cast their vote. And they automatically get underrepresented in the House of Commons.
The only real flaw I can see in this system is that it would probably lead to fewer votes coming in, which would mean less money being made. But if there has to be a victim for the sake of overall fairness, then you could find a worse one than television producers.

Shaving and Eating
English translation follows the German text.
It is good that shaving and eating are not identical in all of their characteristics. One only starts to shave during puberty. Were one to only start eating during puberty, one would only stop eating milk mush and carrot puree in one's 18th year, and the enjoyment of a steak would be postponed until the adult years, when one's teeth are threatening to fall out anyway.
The more often one shaves, the more often one has to shave, so they say. If one would have to eat more often, merely because one were to eat a bit more often, then one would quickly develop into a fatso (a fatsa). It is of course true, that with crisps and peanut nibbles one can swiftly fall into the cycle of mindless muncing, but with other kinds of cuisine, such as appels and broccoli florets, there is fortunately still a difference from shaving.
Hair plays a central role in shaving. Not in eating. And had God seen that, he would have certainly seen, that it is good.
Fondue is not prepared in the shower, which is a pleasing thing to hear.
The sharpness of the knife is something which links both activities. With both, a too sharp knife can lead to a cut through the throat (anagram of truth through the coat), but in both cases only when one is behaving uncarefully with the tool, mostly because one is attempting to watch Pop Idol at the same time.
Unshaved men often don't look bad, whereas men, who haven't eaten look annoyed and hungry.
One shaves oneself, but one doesn't eat oneself.
Shaving one's head is seen as an absurd practice (amongst females) - eating the head of a wild boar is seen as an expression of the highest elegance (amongst princes of the middle ages).
The final and possibly most decisive difference between shaving and eating ist that one's trachea tends to close whilst eating, so that pieces of food fall into the correct tube. If this was also the case whilst shaving, it could lead to a blockage of the nostrils, which could be followed by a sudden blowing out in an inopportune moment and a spraying of the mirror standing (or hanging) in front of the shaver with the shaving foam, which is no longer sitting on the upper lip. The foam on the mirror would then block the view of the reflection (in fact it would prevent a reflection from even coming about - because it would already get in the way of the light beams on the way to the mirror), which could further lead to imprecise hand movements. Finally it could happen in such a manner, that one could overlook one part of the unshaven face and then go out amongst one's fellow men with a half unshaven and a half shaven face. Comments referring to this would then in all probability dominate the talk at the evening event, so that one would not even come to the desired topic, the emigration taking place tomorrow (because of which one wanted to shave in the first place), and which one would then either have to postpone because of such a nonsense, or one would have to emigrate, without having let one's acquaintances know, in whose memory one would for ever remain the half-shaven idiot, who just disappeared. The assumption that one had emigrated because one was so ashamed of the half-shavenness, would unfortunately be unavoidable. An outsider would then remark: Had God seen that, then he would have seen, that it wasn't good.
That's why it's good that shaving and eating aren't identical in all charicteristics.

Fish and Chips and Cheese
English translation follows the German text.
Jut.
Some things go well together: Fish and Chips. Some things don't: Fish and Cheese. Every Thursday I try to combine two of the current world events and write something sensible or interesting or, if it really comes of, vaguely entertaining.
Today, Bobby Zamora was accepted into the Music Hall of Fame. As a young boy he wowed millions of fans across the whole world with his talent. The high point of his career will probably not come until the Summer of 2010, when he will hit the winning goal in the World Cup final. His fifth album Off the Wall was also a global success and, if he hadn't have died when he was 50 two Summers ago, then he might have also won the Premier League, which he could have kept in his cupboard next to his multiple gold records. He was a wunderkind, but his first years at the top level at West Ham and Spurs were rather difficult, until Thriller helped him to break through to world stardom. Now, for ever honoured in the Hall of Fame, Bobby Zamora will never be forgotten and his acquittal in June 2005 has become the real Kennedy Moment (where were you when?) of today's generation.
Right: it would be nice if you would write "Fish and Chips" or "Fish and Cheese" as your comments - then, over the course of the ensuing weeks, we can compare all the pairs of two with one another and see which one is the most super. Good.
