I really like to justify my actions. Even if I don't have to do it to anyone. Not to my boss, not to a judge, not even to my readership. To be honest, the world often couldn't care less what one does, when we're talking about small change, but I still want to justify it, when my conscience gets on my nerves.
Recently, I thought up a whole system in order to justify an, in all honesty, completely irrelevant action - it works according to a well-known model, namely according to the 12-steps-model (made famous by the Alcoholics Anonymous, though here applied slightly differently).
The model is, in this case, the 12-step-model for tramps. Step 12 means a complete tramp, step 0 means a completely respectable genteleman and step 6 is somewhere in the middle. I don't have to describe every step in detail here, but I will explain braoadly how it works:
At step 12 you don't have any idea how you should even survive - you live in a state of permanent intoxication, stumble through the streets and don't get anything done but somehow don't die either.
At step 11 you've got your begging right down, you might even have a fixed point where you always stand and ask for spare change.
At step 10 you even have a kind of work plan and collect bottles for recycling.
And so on.
At the other end of the scale it looks like this:
At step 0 you have your own house, a spouse, children, a job or even your own company. You don't drink any alcohol and go to the gym regularly.
At step 1 almost everything is in place - but maybe you don't have a gym membership - or you do have one, but you still sit about on the couch at the weekends.
At step 3 you're still quite respectable, but maybe you have just a spouse and no kids because you are afraid of becoming a tramp at some stage and aren't so sure of your respectability.
You see how the step system works.
Certainly, it's always very good for me when I notice that I've gone one step in the direction of respectability and so one step further away from complete tramphood.
Now I get to the point of this post: I recently started work at a new job and so went one step in the good direction - I was pleased - and so I can justify the fact that I sometimes drink beer in the shower.
See you tomorrow.

Patrice Evra
English translation follows the German text.
Hallo.
Hello. Yesterday Patrice Evra was team captain for Man United as they won the league cup final 2-1 against Aston Villa. Lots of people like Evra because he used to be homeless, but has still managed to become a professional footballer. As captain he was the first to accept the cup in Wembley Stadium and thereby join the world's best. He used to be homeless though. How has he managed it? With hard work, a pinch of luck, and a sack of talent of course. How else? I too like Evra, but his success sends a dangerous message to the homeless of this world. One could think that every homeless person would have the chance to become league cup champion, just because he worked quite hard. That isn't the case though. Lots of homeless people don't work very hard at all, they are level ten bums, sweat while eating kebabs and steal bread from pigeons. So they can't do anything about the fact that their footballing success leaves something to be desired and we shouldn't expect any Evra-esque achievements from them. Evra is awesome but he doesn't have to be a role model for the homeless - they won't all play for Manchester United and we shouldn't put them under this pressure. They've got it hard enough.
