The impact of the written word on the human psyche

English translation follows the German text.

A couple of weeks ago I was chatting to my wife about our new flat. We don't have a new flat yet but I thought it would be good to get everything planned in advance. We talked about a few sensible things, how many rooms we need and stuff, but then I also said, "We should certainly avoid buying any cups which have "coffee" or "mocha" written on them, because you just feel stupid if you're drinking some other drink out of a cup which bears a label of this kind." I thought that was correct and good. Yesterday though, I was out buying cups and the cheapest cup of the desired size and shape was such a one with "Latte" written on it. I hesitated for a few minutes, was even in another shop and then eventually I didn't buy the cup because I do indeed think that my principles are correct. I also realised during these few minutes, that I have for a long time been drinking vodka or cognac or other spirits out of shot glasses with all kinds of stuff written on them. I even enjoy doing it. I even go so far as to like shot glasses with stuff written on them far more than plain ones, even if I rarely intend to knock back the drink that is described in the marking. I don't yet have any reasoning for this diametric difference between my preferences with coffee and with vodka, but as soon as I've cleared things up, I'll let you know. If you've experienced similar complications, then you know where you can leave a comment here.

  1. Stick to your guns on this one, Bench. I completely share your opinion about the worst mugs being the ones sporting prescriptive text such as 'mocha' or 'latte'. I would even go so far as to say shot glasses with similarly prescriptive text on them are also unacceptable unless they are branded shot glasses for specific spirits.
